General information

This tour will lead us to the important historic and touristic places in Tuscany. We will see places like Pisa, Florence and San Gimignano, which are part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage, as well as other beautiful places like Lucca, Greve or Vinci.

Tour highlights:
  - Discover your personal miracle at the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa
  - Refresh yourself with a plunge into the sea at the Versilia coast
  - Walk on the city walls of Lucca
  - Visit the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci
  - Enter the lively city of Florence
  - Cycle through the Chianti hills
  - Get enchanted by the towers of San Gimignano

As most of the Tuscany is very hilly, you should be aware of frequent ups and down. We have designed the route in order to touch as many 'must sees' as possible, but also to give you an impression of the beauty of the Tuscan countryside. We will enjoy good food and wine and sleep in exciting locations.

All kinds of bikes are welcome, whether you have a road bike, mountainbike, city bike or even an eBike. Depending on the number of participants we will cycle in several (at least two) teams with different speed levels.

The Global Biking Initiative (GBI) wants to show you the most interesting places in Europe the sportive way. We are proud of our international participants, that makes it easy for everybody to make new friends from other countries. Our main goal is the continuous support of charity projects worldwide. We achieve this by engaging the participants to raise funds that support charity projects in their home countries.

Here you'll find an abstract of all information regarding this tour.

Charity

As the GBI is a charity ride, you have to register for a GBI country (typically your home country) and raise funds in addition to the participation fee for the local supported charity in this country. The minimum donation for this event is 50 €. Each participant is kindly requested to raise more than the minimum donations to support our charity projects.

Tour description

Day 1: Pisa to Lucca
This tour starts at the Leaning Tower. The first day is great for getting started. In the beginning it is mostly flat while we cycle along the Costa de Versilia. The superb beaches may tempt you to plunge into the sea. After a short ride to Carrara, where you can see the marble quarries at the hills, we pass the foothills of the Apuanian Alps and head to our destination Lucca.

Day 2: Lucca to Florence
Between hills and river we are cycling to Vinci, birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci. At Empoli we follow the river Arno for a while and later we cross a mountain range, where we can see Florence in a distance. The most important attractions are on our route through the city. Some kilometers outside of Florence is our destination for today.

Day 3: Florence to San Gimignano
We cycle through Chianti area. The hilly countryside will capture your heart and challenge your legs. Along our route we will see numerous vineyards. Resting on the picturesque market place in Greve in Chianti is not the worst thing today. Then we cycle straight to San Gimignano with its medieval towers.

Day 4: San Gimignano to Pisa
On the last day we cycle via Gambassi Terme and Castelfiorentino through the Val d’Elsa. From here it is one last uphill to San Miniato, before we can descent to the Arno valley, where we follow the river until we reach the final tour destination in Pisa.

Find your team

TEAM Torre Pendente
Patrick Brüggemann
Teamnumber 1
1
23 km/h
Languages: German, English

The main focus is to have fun, see a lot of the lovely nature and cycle with an appropriate speed on each stage.
TEAM Gulliver
Luca Zaninello
Teamnumber 2
2
27 km/h
Languages: Italian, English

Our goal is to have a lot of fun, enjoying the beauty of the landscape (quite easy in Tuscany), being satisfied in the evening of the miles ridden together. We prefer short stops, depending on the day and the path: in any case I’d like to live an unforgettable experience in this marvellous region.
TEAM Chianti Classico
Guido Weber
Teamnumber 3
2
25 km/h
Languages: German, English

We will choose Track 2 with an ambitious but feasible average speed about 25 km/h (so racing bikes preferred). We having breaks in a regular matter, what means that we don’t plan it but stop if we want (as the result of a democratic decision) to enjoy the landscape, have a beer or whatever. If you want to have a lot of fun within an ambitious team.
TEAM GBI-Support
Teamnumber 10
0 km/h
Registration for GBI Staff only!
